In Japan‚ Gangnam Style Is a Hit‚ But PSY Is a Bust

AGENCIES
Since its debut last summer, it’s been nearly impossible to avoid the screaming siren and faux-giddyup-ing phenomenon that is Gangnam Style. Oddly, the only area of the world that seems uninfected by the viral sensation is Japan, which usually loves Korean pop artists.

Instead of embracing PSY, the Japanese prefer any number of Gangnam Style knockoffs, most notably the K-Pop All-Stars remix that currently sits at No. 67 on iTunes in Japan—for $1.69. Yes, it’s baffling that anyone would pay for the original when there’s YouTube (GOOG), let alone $1.69 for a remix that is, take my word for it, much worse. And while the global disparity in iTunes pricing is well documented, Japan’s unparalleled disinterest in PSY makes the relatively high price of the K-pop cover even more curious.............

Octomom Wins Best Celebrity Sex Tape AVN‚ Hopes Award 'Will Open Doors to More Opportunities'

AGENCIES
Octomom has found something she’s really good at ... besides having babies.

Nadya Suleman, who has 14 children including 4-year-old octuplets, won Best Celebrity Sex Tape at the Adult Video News (AVN) Awards – which have been dubbed “The Oscars of Porn” – in Las Vegas on January 21, beating out former Jesse James mistress Michelle “Bombshell” McGhee, Playmate Leola Bell, and Saigon Kick drummer Phil Varone (who won in 2012).

“This is fantastic, what an honor,” the 37-year-old said in a statement. “Hopefully, this award will open doors to more opportunities. I'm proud I did this movie. It helped me grow into a woman. 'Octomom Home Alone' is a true reflection of my intimate side. I am excited to have the award. I am trying to figure out where I will put it."

She may want to leave room on the shelf for more awards. Octomom, who had to get her family of 15 back on welfare in early January, will be returning to the stripper pole on Valentine’s Day at T’s Lounge in West Palm Beach, Florida, as part of a legal deal for the club not to sue her for breach of contract last summer. Octomom angered the club when she danced topless at nearby Playhouse, for which she was paid $5,000 (plus the $10 she charged for autographs).

But since she’s had such success as a porn star, might she make another movie? “As of right now, no,” she told Huffington Post. “But you never know.”

We’ll take that as a “yes.”

LONDON: Daughter of rock legend Mick Jagger and supermodel Jerry Hall, Lizzy Jagger is the face of the new Skiny campaign - her second season with the cult Austrian intimates brand.

American Lizzy, 28, joins a host of international supermodels who have also fronted Skiny campaigns through its 26 year history, including Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen and Laetitia Casta.

Showcasing underwear and loungewear, Lizzie shot the campaign in South Africa and the whole of the collection is based around the Out of Africa/safari vibe, under the tag line 'Who Scares?'

She modelled from Playboy in 2011 and just a few months ago got naked with a fish to highlight unsustainable fishing.

But the model hasn't been pushed to her limits yet.

The ‘Who Scares?’ campaign sees Lizzy and her fellow models riding zebras, fearlessly facing rhinos and bumping along dirt tracks in a four wheel drive.

The Skiny brand labels itself as 'playful and fresh' and 'with a great sense of fun'. The underwear is made of cotton with statement prints, basic colours and bold brights.

The brand values good shaping and incorporate 'smooth, seamless and shapely designs' for 'the ultimate T shirt bras'.

They also incorporate loungewear into the collection, reworking cotton basics with new prints and bold colourways.

Talking about the brand and products, Lizzy said: 'It's just my kind of underwear - pretty, sexy, comfortable, versatile and well made.

'Also Skiny uses a lot of natural fabrics, which is important to me.'

Regarding her friends and family's reactions to the pictures, Lizzy said: 'My friends, my sister Georgia and my mum think they are really cheeky.'

Skiny is available on Amazon and swimwear will be launching later in the year.

Amber Heard dumps Johnny Depp for female model

AGENCIES
She is said to have ditched Johnny over his moods and grown "very close" to Marie.
LONDON: Johnny Depp is down in the dumps after bisexual girlfriend Amber Heard left him — and went on holiday with a stunning model, reported British daily The Sun on Saturday.

Amber, 26, ended the seven-month romance as she and Marie de Villepin, daughter of ex-French premier Dominique, flew to Paris.

She is said to have ditched Johnny over his moods and grown “very close” to Marie.

Pals said the actor, 49 — Tonto in a new Lone Ranger movie — is “cut up” as they had even discussed starting a family.

One said: “He hasn’t been this smitten for a long time.

“He’s been head-over-heels in love with Amber. But just as she started to love him back, she got cold feet.

“They seemed happy and were even talking of marriage and babies.

“But Amber grew fed up of him and his moods.”

The US actress and Marie, also 26, have frequently been seen together as they spend a week in the romantic French capital.

They have headed out for cinema dates on Marie’s scooter.

The pair were introduced last October by Amber’s artist ex-girlfriend Tasya Van Ree, 36. The source added: “They’re very close and some friends say they’re a couple.”

Last June Johnny split from Vanessa Paradis, 39 — mum of his two children — after 14 years together.

He fell for Amber on the set of their movie The Rum Diary. He moved her into a £10million Tennessee mansion and even named a bay on his Bahamas isle Amber’s Cove after her.

Not winning an Oscar does not bother Jackson

AGENCIES
NEW YORK: Samuel L Jackson isn’t bothered about winning an Oscar. The actor has only received one Academy Award nomination in his long career — for a supporting role in 1994’s Pulp Fiction — but doesn’t feel he needs a gold statue to validate his work.

“I’ve had a pretty good career,” he said. “I don’t think it will validate my stature in Hollywood one way or another. I’ve done some pretty interesting things, and it’s been a long and rich career.”

The 64-year-old star was crowned the highest grossing actor of all time in 2011 — based partly on the success of franchises in which he’s appeared, such as Star Wars and The Avengers — which Jackson believes is reward enough.

“Winning an Oscar is definitely not going to help my box-office record,” Jackson said.

The actor is set to reprise his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury in Captain America sequel The Winter Soldier next year, and expects to appear in more Marvel superhero movies.

“I think I’ve got four or five pictures left on my nine picture deal. I’ll just keep showing up,” he said.

Was Monroe murdered?

AGENCIES
NEW YORK: Marilyn Monroe was murdered — according to a new report.

America’s Globe magazine insists the Hollywood bombshell didn’t kill herself with a sleeping pill overdose, but was killed.

The deputy coroner who signed the sex symbol’s death certificate reveals he was forced to take part in a massive cover-up.

“Her death certificate is a lie,” a source said. Author Tony Jerris previously claimed Marilyn had a very steamy night with teen Jane Lawrence, with whom she had bonded with over their shared troubled family histories.

“Jane met Marilyn when she was 12 because her adopted father ran the legal department at RKO studio,” the author of Marilyn Monroe: My Little Secret told Radar Online.

“They soon became close friends after realising that they had been in the same orphanage at different times of their lives, even though Marilyn was 14 years older, and neither of them knew their birth fathers. They became close friends because there were so many similarities in their past.

“Jane always struggled with her sexuality, she talked to Marilyn about this many times and she was very understanding. She told her, ‘Whatever your sexual preference is, it means nothing — love is love’.”

AGENCIES
WASHINGTON: After his recent breakup with Selena Gomez and making headlines with marijuana smoking pictures, Justin Bieber has sparked another controversy by showing his bare butt in an Instagram picture on January 18.

Bieber deleted the image shortly after it was posted to his official account, though it had already been liked more than 15,000 times and received more than 2,700 comments, Us magazine reported.

Bieber’s succinct reply was, “Haha.”

Swift‚ Fox feud at peace

AGENCIES
LONDON: Taylor Swift plays down her rivalry with Michaej J Fox after the actor seemingly told her to stay away from his son Sam.

Swift has taken to Twitter to reveal that Fox has reached out, and she insists the pair “are good.’’

Their feud followed Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s skit at the Golden Globes last week when they warned the I Knew You Were Trouble hit maker away from Fox’s son Sam.

The Back To The Future star was asked about the singer in an interview with Vulture.com, and whether he’d allow her to date his son.

Fox, 51, said, “No. No ... Just back off ... I don’t keep up with it all. But Taylor Swift writes songs about everybody she’s out with, right? What a way to build a career.’’

He implied his son would become a subject of such a track, jokingly suggesting ‘Sam, You Piece of S**t’ as a potential title.

Although it seemed the actor slammed her, Swift’s now taken to Twitter to say they have no issue.

She wrote, “Hey everybody, Michael J Fox got in touch with me today and we are good. Thank you for having my back.’’ However, his son cheekily retweeted and added, “Hope he gave her my # [number].’’

Gaga's Judas‚ a rip off?

AGENCIES
NEW YORK: Lady Gaga’s plagiarism trial over her hit track Judas is to be held in her hometown of Manhattan, it has been revealed.

Though the case has been proceeding largely under the radar in Chicago, Bill Niro, the plaintiff’s lawyer, told the New York Post that he’ll be in the city next week deposing experts who are confident that Gaga’s song is a rip-off of a song by his client, Rebecca Francescatti.

“The case is proceeding along a schedule that is a little slow, but deliberate,” Niro said.

He claims that they have a strong case and can prove that there are segments of Francescatti’s music and lyrics that have found their way into the song Judas.

'Gangnam Style' takes top song prize at 'K-pop Grammys'

REUTERS
South Korean rapper Psy's quirky viral hit "Gangnam Style" took the prize for top song on Wednesday at the 27th annual Golden Disk Awards, a Korean pop event dubbed the "Korean Grammys."

The two-day celebration of all things K-pop, including performances by superstars such as the boy band Super Junior, was held in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur before hordes of screaming fans, a testimony to the soaring popularity of Korean pop music around the world.

Nowhere has that been more apparent than with "Gangnam Style," an infectious hit that made history last month when it became the first ever video on YouTube to reach 1 billion views, the latest record on the song's surge into mainstream pop.

The tune won the Song of the Year award, the final prize.

The awards were only the latest accolades for Psy, 35, in what has been a whirlwind year for the chubby rapper, the first K-pop artist to achieve mainstream success in the United States as a result of "Gangnam Style."

Decked out in a bow tie and suit jackets varying from pink to baby blue, and only a towel for one sequence set in a sauna, Psy raps in Korean and busts funky moves based on horse-riding in venues ranging from playgrounds to subways.

The song, released in July, was meant as a commentary on the rampant materialism of today's South Korea - particularly in relation to the Gangnam section of the city, which Psy has termed Seoul's Beverly Hills.

"My goal in this music video was to look uncool until the end. I achieved it," Psy told Reuters in August.

The popularity of the song, which has prompted many copycat and parody videos, has added fuel to growing international interest in Asian pop music, especially the K-pop industry, which now aims to follow Psy into mainstream Western pop music.

Thanks to their youth, glowing image and the style of their songs and dances, K-pop fans have grown rapidly in Southeast Asia, formerly dominated by stars from the West as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan.

A Malaysian fan who queued for three days to get into the first night of the awards ceremony said she loved how the K-pop stars strived for perfection.

"K-pop stars have been working very hard, even before they make their first debut. They spend a lot of time practicing to become a perfect artist," said the 20-something Tay Ching Ee. "This is what other artists should learn from them."

The Golden Disk Awards began in 1986, with winners chosen based on album sales and digital downloads. The ceremony first ventured overseas in 2012, when it was held in Japan.

On Tuesday, the first night, Super Junior again won the best album award with their album "Sexy, Free & Single." Boy band Shinee scooped the Most Popular Star prize.

The Bad Romance singer is a huge fan of the late eccentric pop star and would love to see his old home restored it to its former glory.

A source told The Sun newspaper, “Lady Gaga is obsessed with Michael. She’s become good friends with his sister La Toya and would love more than anything else to restore Neverland to its original state.

“His kids are all desperate to hold on to their childhood home so they can decide what they want to do with it properly when they’ve grown up. “Gaga would love to help with the financial costs by buying a share.”

Gaga, also recently bought 55 items in an auction of Jackson’s costumes. After making the purchases she tweeted, “The 55 pieces I collected today will be archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson, his bravery, & fans worldwide (sic).”

Tamara Ecclestone prepares to invade USA

AGENCIES
Tamara is embracing single life for the chance to learn more about herself.
LONDON: She had a turbulent year in 2012 after splitting from her long-term love.

And after spending increasing amounts of time with her pregnant sister, Petra, in Los Angeles, Tamara Ecclestone looks as though she plans to take the States by storm, reported the Daily Mail on Wednesday.

Showing off her incredible bikini body in a sexy new photoshoot, the 28-year-old heiress paraded her stunning curves and killer tan for all to see.

The brunette socialite preened and posed to perfection as she showed off her animal magnetism in a skimpy zebra print bikini with gold chain detailing while getting to work on set in Los Angeles.

Leaning up against a wall seductively, the daughter of Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone ensured her toned and tanned physique were the centre of attention as she worked the camera like a true professional.

After a brief cosmetic touch-up, where she was laughing and joking with her make-up artist, Tamara changed into swimsuit number two.

Leaving even less to the imagination, the barely-there zig-zag Missoni two-piece did little to contain the Billion $$ Girl star's incredible curves.

Teetering on a pair of skyscraper heels, the heiress completed her look with her long voluminous brunette locks flowing around her shoulders and dramatic smokey eye make-up.

Tamara seemed to be in great spirits as she got to work on the shoot, giggling away as an army of assistants catered to her every wish.

And the socialite seemed keen to get to work on the three-day shoot, tweeting: 'Another coffee needed then time for first photo shoot of 2013 #newbeginnings.'

She later added: 'Great shoot today @alanstrutt nice to see you x.'

With her younger sister Petra, 24, - who is currently expecting her first child with husband James Stunt - already based in Los Angeles, Tamara is reportedly eyeing up the lavish Fleur de Lys estate in Bel Air to add to her existing property portfolio.

Undeterred by the mansion's £78million price tag, the star is said to be planning a relocation to the US in the not too distant future.

But although Petra is pregnant and happily married, Tamara is embracing single life for the chance to learn more about herself.

Speaking to the MailOnline about her relationship status recently, Tamara said: 'There’s no men in my life at the moment.

'I’m not looking for love but if it happens, it happens, and that would be nice. It happens when you least expect it.

'I’ve always been in long-term relationships and this is the first time I’ve lived alone and been single and it’s actually good to be able to be alone.

'I’m not looking, but I’m not adverse to the idea. I’m just having fun.'

LOS ANGELES: Pop star Justin Timberlake has brought his trademark sexy crooner voice back with his first new song in five years, receiving a warm welcome from fans and critics on Monday on his long-awaited return to music.

The singer released "Suit & Tie" featuring Jay-Z on Sunday night, and within hours, the song had topped the U.S. iTunes chart. The new single also came with the announcement of a new album, "The 20/20 Experience," to be released later this year.

The new song, produced by Timberlake's long-time collaborator Timbaland, features the singer's falsetto voice over a laid-back, hip-hop beat, fusing R&B and pop sounds.

Critics drew on Timberlake's newly married status - the singer wed actress Jessica Biel last October - as a possible inspiration for the track.

Rolling Stone Magazine reviewer Jody Rosen called the single "a gift to the world's wedding DJs ... an ode to dressing to the nines and going dancing."

Pitchfork music website reviewer Stephen Deusner said the track was "one hell of a wedding reception jam, as bubbly as champagne," while Billboard's Jason Lipschultz called the song a "sleek, wholly assured dance number."

Timberlake, 31, who teased fans with cryptic Twitter messages last week, quickly became a trending topic on social media, along with the song.

MTV Buzzworthy's editor, Tamar Anitai, said the avid online response was no surprise, given Timberlake's vast fan base and the long wait for new music.

"None of his fans have gone anywhere. He's the type of artist who can take 7 years between albums and his fans are still waiting outside his studio door," Anitai told Reuters.

The singer's last album, "FutureSex/LoveSounds" in 2006, produced six hit singles including "SexyBack," which brought the singer four Grammy awards.

ROOM FOR TWO JUSTINS IN POP MUSIC?

Timberlake rose to fame as one-fifth of 1990's boy band N'Sync, becoming a pin-up for his good looks. He dated fellow singer Britney Spears.

After N'Sync parted ways in 2002, Timberlake launched his solo career with a new look and edgier sound in his debut solo album "Justified," with songs like "Cry Me A River" and "Rock Your Body," becoming chart hits. The album won a Grammy award.

His "FutureSex/LoveSounds" album arrived at the forefront of a new sound in the pop charts, fusing pop, R&B, hip hop and dance.

"'FutureSex' is what people are holding onto because it had that really futuristic sound from Timbaland," Anitai said.

Timberlake took a musical hiatus the last five years to focus on his acting career. He appeared in 2010 Facebook film "The Social Network," 2011's "Friends with Benefits" and last year's "The Trouble With The Curve," alongside Clint Eastwood.

During Timberlake's time away from music, a new Justin blazed a trail onto the pop charts, Canadian teenage pop phenomenon Justin Bieber, who has drawn comparisons to Timberlake for his inclusion of hip hop and R&B in his music.

Bieber, who has more than 32 million Twitter followers, tweeted a tip of the hat to Timberlake after the "SexyBack" singer posted his teaser on Thursday, saying "i have heard some stuff. u got a good reason to be ready. #greatmusic."

"There is room for two Justins, but Justin Timberlake is the original Justin and I think there's always going to be room for him," Anitai said.

Lohan case returns to court over lying allegations

ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES: Lindsay Lohan is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in a misdemeanor case over allegations she lied to police about a June traffic accident, though the actress is not required to attend the hearing.

Lohan is charged with reckless driving, lying to police about whether she was driving when her Porsche slammed into the back of a dump truck, and obstructing police from performing their duties. The accident occurred while Lohan and her assistant were on their way to shoot a beach scene for the television movie "Liz and Dick."

Lohan told police that she wasn't driving, but police suspect she was behind the wheel. The wreck sent her to the hospital briefly. The actress was on probation at the time for a 2011 necklace theft case and could be sentenced to 245 days in jail if a judge determines her conduct violated her probation. Her probation was revoked last month but she had yet to enter a plea on the new charges.

Lohan's publicist and longtime attorney Shawn Holley did not return messages Monday about the hearing.

The accident was not the only problem she encountered while shooting "Liz and Dick," a film based on the love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. A week after the accident, paramedics were summoned to Lohan's hotel room when she was late to a shoot. Her publicist at the time attributed her absence to fatigue and dehydration.

The film was expected to be a comeback opportunity for Lohan, who spent the past several years struggling with criminal court cases. Her performance, however, was panned by critics and fans.

She also was arrested in New York after an alleged fight with a woman, but a criminal complaint hasn't been drawn up. The district attorney's office there said last week that its inquiry was ongoing.

Although Lohan is not required to appear at Tuesday's hearing, she would have to appear when a probation violation hearing is scheduled.

Bookies favour Lincoln for Oscars

AGENCIES
WASHINGTON: The movie Lincoln, its star Daniel Day-Lewis and director Steven Spielberg are the odds-on favourites to win this year’s Academy Awards, it has been revealed.

After Oscar nominations of January 10 were revealed, oddsmakers were quickly calculating the odds for each nominee and, by far, most of them had Lincoln sweeping the awards.

Day-Lewis was rated at 1/8 odds to take home his third Oscar, Spielberg was given 1/4 odds and Lincoln was set at 2/5 odds.

However, there are still a few categories in which oddsmakers expect to see a real horse race, ABC News reported. Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain were running neck-and-neck in the best actress race after the nominations were announced. In the supporting actor race, Day-Lewis’ co-star Tommy Lee Jones had a slight edge over Phillip Seymour Hoffman for The Master. Before it’s all over, and the winners’ names are read, Bovada will likely rake in tens of thousands of dollars in bets, ranging from a buck to $100, Kevin Bradley, sportsbook manager for online gambling site Bovada, said. Most of those wagers will come in the days before the Oscar telecast, when the betting limits might start at $500- $1,000.

The way it works is, if you put down $400 for Spielberg you would gain $100 if he wins. But if you put down $100 for Amour director Michael Haneke, who’s ranked at 10/1 odds, and he wins, you could earn $1,000.

'Amour' takes U.S. film critics' top prize as best film

NEW YORK: "Amour," European director Michael Haneke's sensitive depiction of an aging couple's battle with declining health, was named the year's best film by the National Society of Film Critics on Saturday, with star Emmanuelle Riva winning best actress and Haneke taking the prize for best director.

The group, made up of 60 prominent movie critics from newspapers, magazines and other media outlets nationwide, chose Daniel Day-Lewis as best actor for his acclaimed performance in the title role in "Lincoln."

Best supporting actor went to Matthew McConaughey for the male stripper film "Magic Mike," while Amy Adams won best supporting actress for "The Master."

In choosing "Amour" for its top prize, the critics were more in line with European honors such as the Cannes Film Festival which awarded it the Palme D'Or, than with earlier U.S. awards, many of which went to presumed Oscar frontrunner "Zero Dark Thirty."

In the film, Riva plays a woman who suffers a stroke, challenging her and her husband, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, who becomes her caretaker. Isabelle Huppert plays the couple's daughter.

The stars are among France's most revered actors, while German-born Haneke has been honored for many previous films such as "The White Ribbon" and "The Piano Teacher," with a canon that often hews more towards the bleak, brutal and disturbing than the overtly sensitive.

In other awards, the critics gave the nonfiction, or documentary prize, to "The Gatekeepers," which looks at the Israeli security agency Shin Bet, while Tony Kushner won best screenplay for "Lincoln." Best cinematography went to "The Master."

"This Is Not a Film" took the experimental film prize, while the critics gave two special film heritage honors to Laurence Kardish, senior film curator at the Museum of Modern Art, and to Milestone Film and Video for its ongoing Shirley Clarke project.

The critics awards are among the last handed out in the run-up to the Oscar nominations, which will be announced on Thursday in Los Angeles, with the Academy Awards gala slated for February 24.

"Amour" is Austria's official submission for the best foreign language film category.

Adele tops US charts for second time

LONDON: Adele has topped the best-selling record chart in the US for the second year running —with the same album. She shifted 4.4 million copies of her follow-up hit 21 in 2012 after selling 5.8 million the year before, the Mirror reported.

The last time an artist had back-to-back best-sellers was in 1983 and 1984 with Michael Jackson’s Thriller. She has sold 4.6 million copies, making it the fourth biggest selling album ever.

Billboard magazine’s Keith Caulfield said that it’s sort of an once-in-a-lifetime album. Adele’s sales in the UK have continued to climb and last year 21 was the second-biggest seller according to data from the Official Charts Company, behind Emeli Sande’s Our Version of Events.

Despite being released nearly two years ago, 21 amassed a further 786,000 copies in 2012, bringing UK sales to 4.6 million. It has now overtaken Oasis’s (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? to become the fourth biggest-selling album of all time in the UK.

Retailer HMV reported that it sold its one millionth copy of the album during the Christmas period.
